In 1905, industrial unionists met in Chicago to found a labor union aimed at organizing all workers, and the Industrial Workers of the World, or IWW, was the result. Aiming for the creation of a directly democratic, worker-owned economy within the shell of the old, hierarchical capitalist system, they succeeded in mobilizing workers from all walks of life into some of the most successful labor actions in U. S. history. Bypass the broken political system, say the Wobblies, and organize on the job — where you are robbed! [END] Permalink: The Wobblies
This is part six of six of “Evidence of Revision,” an eight-hour video collection which covers many a taboo subject in American history including the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK, the causes of the Vietnam war, the social uprisings of the 1960s and ’70s, the Jonestown massacre, government mind control programs such as MKULTRA, and vote rigging and political corruption at the highest levels. This installment focuses on the assassination of civil rights figure Martin Luther King, Jr., which seems to have been carried out by someone working with or impersonating someone with access to a Memphis police car. This is part four of six of “Evidence of Revision,” an eight-hour video collection which covers many a taboo subject in American history including the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK, the causes of the Vietnam war, the social uprisings of the 1960s and ’70s, the Jonestown massacre, government mind control programs such as MKULTRA, and vote rigging and political corruption at the highest levels. The first half of this installment highlights the bid for the Democratic Party nomination for President undertaken by then-Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968 which, along with his life, was cut short by gunfire in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in June of that year. The second half focuses on evidence that Sirhan Sirhan, a busboy at the hotel who is officially Kennedy’s lone assassin, is, in fact, anything but, and that a much larger plot was in effect on the night in question. This is part two of six of “Evidence of Revision,” an eight-hour video collection which covers many a taboo subject in American history including the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK, the causes of the Vietnam war, the social uprisings of the 1960s and ’70s, the Jonestown massacre, government mind control programs such as MKULTRA, and vote rigging and political corruption at the highest levels. This installment, which opens with another great “conspiracy” montage, picks up where part one left off, with the assassination of John F. Kennedy and a review of Kennedy’s public stances, continues into the escalation of the Vietnam conflict into a full-blown and terrible war under the notoriously corrupt Presidential administration of Lyndon Johnson, and concludes with a review of the House Select Committee on Assassinations and related topics, including FBI operative Lee Oswald’s 201 File. Above is part one of six of “Evidence of Revision,” an eight-hour video collection which covers many a taboo subject in American history including the assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK, the causes of the Vietnam war, the social uprisings of the 1960s and ’70s, the Jonestown massacre, government mind control programs such as MKULTRA, and vote rigging and political corruption at the highest levels. This installment, which opens with an excellent video collage on “conspiracy theory,” focuses on the highly suspicious assassination of U. S. President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. From a long and rambling introduction from a news commentator upon Kennedy’s arrival concerning the assassination of William McKinley to reports and video of two rifles and two different types of ammunition having been found in the Texas School Book Depository from where Kennedy was officially shot to the arrest and assassination of presumed killer Lee Oswald, himself, “Evidence of Revision” is a moving overview of the many questions which still remain concerning this watershed event. Robert Kane Pappas’ “Orwell Rolls in His Grave” is probably the premier video overview of what is wrong with the media today and how American democracy has suffered as a result of the faults of this essential part of a self-governing society. Featuring Robert McChesney, Mark Crispin Miller, Bernie Sanders and others, “Orwell” covers a wide range of topics from the depoliticizing of the American public at the hands of the infotainment-oriented “news” agencies to the widespread media consolidation following the sweeping deregulations of the Reagan era. “Enemy Image” is a history of the American media’s presentation of U. S. wars and the U. S. government and military’s fight to control that presentation, beginning with Vietnam and moving on through the 2003 war in Iraq. While early newsreels, with their patriotic narrative overdubs, presented a polished and sterile image of heroic troops bravely fighting like a well-oiled machine, the relatively unregulated television journalism of the later 1960s showed the common soldier up-close and personal, without the touch-ups of Hollywood. Although the film has a curious lack of mention of the late ’90s war in eastern Europe, it does a good job of comparing the Vietnam era to the much more heavily controlled time from the 1980s to today. “Everybody just wants to go home and go to school. [...] The whole thing stinks.” – U. S. soldier in Vietnam [END] Permalink: Enemy Image
Starting with Republican Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater and on through George W. Bush, “With God on Our Side: George W. Bush and the Rise of the Religious Right in America” describes the influence of the Evangelical Christian movement on American politics and especially on the Republican Party. George W. Bush, here, is shown as the ultimate political puppet, a befuddled alcoholic and son of a CIA director duped into undertaking a Christian transformation, then run for President to woo the Christian right more effectively than his somewhat religiously inept father. “I think the prayers of a lot of people tipped that [2000 U. S. Presidential] election. I really believe that with all my heart. And I believe that five to four vote in the Supreme Court which could have gone the other way, I give God the credit, that he wasn’t finished with us yet.” – Jerry Falwell [END] Permalink: With God on Our Side
“The Corporation” is one of the best criticial overviews of the modern industrial corporation to date. Businesses fashioned in the model of a corporation have been granted legal personhood in the United States under the Fourteenth Amendment and all of the Constitutional rights which go along with that. Multinational corporations, operating across borders in what this film argues is a pathological manner, has had intense impacts on global ecology and society. From efforts to privatize Bolivia’s rainwater to sweatshop labor in China, “The Corporation” takes a look at the many consequences of the corporate directive to earn maximum profit with no inherent regard for anything else. Operation Gladio is a BBC Timewatch series concerning a series of bombings and assassinations of civilians in Western Europe which are believed to have been the work of right-wing elements within NATO intelligence agencies. The origins of the Gladio network may have been surrendered fascists who were put into the employ of the OSS/CIA following World War II for deployment in the event of a Soviet invasion of Europe but who may have, in fact, been deployed to smear and prevent the rise of the political left in Italy and elsewhere.
